Can railways serve as a new site for solar power plants?
The innovative Swiss start-up Sun-Ways is gearing up to make history with a pioneering solar panel installation system directly on railway tracks. This isn’t just any solar solution—it's the world’s first removable photovoltaic (PV) system for railway lines, developed in partnership with the renowned EPFL in Lausanne. Imagine a train that "rolls out" solar panels along the rails, just like laying down a carpet!
After overcoming initial regulatory hurdles, Sun-Ways is set to kick off a three-year pilot project in Switzerland’s Neuchâtel region in spring 2025. The specially designed train will deploy the PV panels, one meter wide, at an impressive rate of up to 1,000 square meters per day. During this trial, electricity generated by the 48 panels on the 100-meter track section will be fed into the power grid, helping to power local homes.
As Europe races toward cleaner energy solutions, groundbreaking projects like this open up exciting new possibilities. Solar railways could be a key player in maximizing solar potential across unconventional spaces.
